What would Ryan Gosling Wear? (How to wear a suit with style)

Celebrity Breakdown: Gosling’s Got it Right
Actor Ryan Gosling has come a long way since his “Disney Days” — and he’s becoming a powerful force in both film and fashion. Last week alone, he was praised twice in the media for his unique style; and he is well on his way to becoming a style icon. Here is my “breakdown” of Ryan’s style at the Cannes International Film Festival, and what it illustrates for men:

Look 1: Gosling was featured in last week’s WWD/Men’sWeek “Man of the Week” article, in a blue satin-shawl lapel tuxedo with contrast pocket detailing, a black bow tie, and black dress shoes.

Grooming: “Classic Hollywood Leading Man” (Side part, slicked-back hair, and neatly trimmed facial hair.)

Look 2: Also in Cannes but with a completely different look, Gosling was featured in GQ Magazine’s Best Dressed Men of the Week wearing a slate gray plaid suit, an open-collared white dress shirt, white wingtip leather dress shoes, and black vintage-inspired glasses.

Grooming: “Chicly Disheveled”

This is my favorite of the two looks, as it shows how masterfully Gosling can dress down a suit without it looking sloppy or too casual. He has just the right amount of “who cares?” attitude, but doesn’t look like he just rolled out of bed.

What Ryan‘s Style Shows Us:

  • Don’t take your attire too seriously.
Getting dressed is supposed to be fun — for you and those who will see you. Gosling displays this attitude with a debonair confidence, which is amplified by his style and appearance.
  • Let your personality shine through.
Personality is an essential element of style, and Gosling has mastered displaying his. He stands out in a crowd amidst all the rest because he adds his own personal twist on the traditional.
  • It’s all about the fit.
Gosling’s suits are impeccably tailored to fit his physique and highlight his best features.

Not ready to wear a bold colored/patterned suit?
Start by adding bold accessories to your look, such as bold ties, socks, pocket squares, etc. Accessories add a lot of style and personality without compromising your comfort zone. From there, you can work up to bolder shirts and suits.
