Shirt tucking? There’s a technique to it? (YES.)
It’s an easy three-step process all men need to know, because nothing ruins your impression like “bunchy-bottom” pants. Follow each of these steps every time you tuck to:
- Instantly improve your look
- Avoid having to constantly re-tuck
- Never be caught doing the “hand saw” in public again
Prep:
Undo your fly completely and allow your shirt to hang naturally.
Smooth:
With a flat palm, brush the sides of the shirt down against your body in four strokes: Front; Back; Side; Other side.
Align:
Align your shirt buttons with your zipper/fly.
Finish:
Pull your pants up, over and around your shirt, and sweep one hand around your back to smooth out any wrinkles. Now you can zip ‘em up.
4 Tips on Tucking
Never do “The Hand Saw.”
You know that “sawing” action with your hand to shove a shirt into closed pants? Bad news. This creates awkward folds under the belt line, which quickly pulls your shirt back out of place again; and leads to “bunchy bottom” below and the “men’s muffin top” above.

Don’t fiddle with it.
Once you’ve tucked, just walk around the room twice and your shirt will naturally release enough for comfort. Men who fiddle with their shirt look end up looking like they’re wearing a blouse.
Wear shirts that fit well.
Even if you’re a tucking Jedi, if your shirt’s too big or boxy, you’re simply dealing with too much fabric to look good. Own shirts that fit your physique well in both length and width.
Pick one: Tucked or un-tucked.
NEVER do the half-tuck. We’re big fans of David Beckham, but this is one look we don’t promote for the layman (see: People Who Are Not David Beckham). While Beckham might be the man to pull this sloppy look off… it still just looks sloppy to us. Make a decision and wear it.

Remember: Just say no to the “hand saw.” And now, you’re all set to tuck!
