How to Turn a Basic Outfit Into a “Look”

We spotted this man in Las Vegas last month, who was generous enough to let us snap a photo for our blog. (We were careful not to interrupt his call.) What caught our eye is how he turns basic items into a fantastic look, which expresses his personality and style.

Simple basics done well, with a pop of color.

The Breakdown: How to do it

  • Fit: Each item fits his physique well, without being “tight” (or uptight).  — 20 pts.
  • Quality: Each item is well designed and constructed—and it shows. This says a lot, namely: “I am a man who understands and values quality.” — 20 pts.
  • Simplicity: He uses contrast (vs pattern) to add interest, creating an understated look that still catches our eye. — 20 pts.
  • Personality: A blazer, denim and dress shirt could easily disappear in the masses—but the orange pop” of his belt adds a world of personality and an air of confidence. — 20 pts.
  • Balance: He keeps things simple and lets the belt play the starring role, adding style without being flashy. — 20 pts.
  • Extra Credit: All items are superb for travel—yet his outfit doesn’t look like “travel wear.” — 25 pts.
  • Style Expert Bonus: Excellent shoes. (Goes with everything… and who wouldn’t look good in those?) — 50 pts.

Total Score: 175
(Okay, the score is meaningless, but the overall rating is: Thumbs up!)

Your weekend assignment:

Turn a basic outfit into a “look” with a pop of color. Try a bold belt like this man, and let your “pop” piece play a starring role.

Our thanks and bravo to this gentleman for the great example.
